S. A. Hughes Consulting is a private business owned and operated by myself, Scott A. Hughes. My motivation for becoming an independent consultant was based on two central issues.

1. Companies want to be connected to the Internet and make use the technologies of which it is comprised, yet there are few people to whom they can turn and receive personal, independent, and objective advice on how they best realize their objectives. Many companies spend large sums of money without really understanding what they are spending it on, and what the alternative products and technologies are.

2. The advantages of Open Source Software are so often overlooked. Open source software is developed, tested and used by many, many people, all over the world on the Internet, over the Internet and for the Internet. There are many reasons as to why the advantages of open source are often not presented by service and product vendor companies, many of which boil down to the fact that profitability for the vendor is best served by locking the customer into their own product. This is not something that open source software easily facilitates. Yet, although many companies do not realize this, this fundamental orientation of the vendor - to lock the customer in - runs contrary to the best interests of the end-user of the product or service. Open source software is not only technically superior in many areas, it also gives the company strategic advantage by ensuring that they always have options.

Given these circumstances, I believe that there is considerable business value to be provided to the client by, a) giving independent advice on what technologies/products best suit their purpose, and b) making the client aware of the advantages of open source software. I back my consulting with integration and support, to ensure that the customer actually realizes the benefits presented.

My formal university and graduate university education is fundamentally business and management oriented. I have been using computers since a young age, and have enjoyed educating myself in this area in parallel with my secondary and tertiary studies. In recent years I have spent more and more time learning about the latest developments in open source software, as well as the general trends in Internet technology and how such technology is used in business.

In the past few years I have spent much of my time using the Linux operating system, installing it for companies, and providing support.

My last employer was Red Hat (Japan), and it was there that I confirmed the validity of open source technology for the business concern, and the constructiveness in spending time with companies and individuals getting them to understand and use the technology.

I began the independent path in September 2001 so that I could work more diversely, working as both the consultant and the engineer, utilizing the ideas and methods, knowledge and skills, and unbiased better judgment that I believe I have built up over the years. I hope they will be of benefit to the client.

About This site

There are two versions of this site: English and Japanese.

- The English site for S. A. Hughes Consulting is http://www.sahughes.net/
- The Japanese site for S. A. Hughes Consulting is http://www.sahughes.jp/

Currently the two sites are essentially of the same contents, however I expect context specific contents to emerge, which I will not necessarily make available in both languages.

The domain sanguine.net is used to host my ftp site (available via http, rsync and ftp) and mailing list(s). Some Japanese specific documentation - especially in regard to the ftp site and its contents - is hosted on the domain sanguine.jp. IP reverse mapping of my network and its IPs is done mainly using sanguine.net, and occasionally with sanguine.jp, depending on use.

This site is solely maintained by myself, and at its date of publication, 2nd of April 2002, is very much still a work in progress. Questions and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
